Great rivers celebrated

AT the heart of Innisfail lies a story shaped by water, where the mighty Johnstone and South Johnstone rivers meet, a landscape rich in history, culture and community spirit.

Riverfest secretary Lynda Stephens said it was that the region’s first people – the Mamu – lived harmoniously with the land following the rivers as lifelines through the rainforest. This deep connection to nature and heritage is the inspiration behind Innisfail Riverfest a celebration designed to honour our past, embrace our present and inspire our future,” she said.

“More than just a festival, Riverfest on Saturday 11 October is a vibrant showcase of inclusiveness, participation and pride. It shines a spotlight on the importance of our rivers, not only as natural treasures, but as the backbone of local life bringing together vessel owners, emergency services and rowing clubs to celebrate the waterways that connect us.

“The festival culminates in a spectacular evening finale with headline act Thirsty Merc and a dazzling fireworks display over the river, an experience rarely seen in our community.

“As the event continues to grow, it aims to draw visitors from beyond the region, boosting local tourism and showcasing everything Innisfail has to offer.

“Riverfest is more than an event it’s a reflection of who we are as a community built on diversity, resilience and a shared love for the rivers that define us.”
