The commemoration began with a march through the town’s main street, followed by a service at Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church, led by Father Kerry Crowley.

The ceremony featured the traditional procession of clergy, police officers and flag bearers, accompanied by piper Marc Darveniza and drummer David Cornish.

Acting Senior Sergeant Rod Stanley read the honourable mention for officers and staff who had died in the past year, with moments of silence observed in their memory.

Sergeant Shawn Pipia delivered the roll of honour for those killed in the line of duty across Australia and the Pacific region, while Sergeants Megan Cryer and Nathan Taylor lit candles symbolising eternal life.

As the hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ played, wreaths and rose petals were laid in tribute and donations were collected in support of Police Legacy.

Sergeant Karl Ah Shay recited The Police Ode, followed by the memorial baton handover from retired officer Barry Anderson to First Year Constable Ryan Kinsela, symbolising the continuity of service.

The ceremony concluded with the police prayer, recovery of flags and light refreshments at the parish centre.

Now in its 36th year, National Police Remembrance Day marks the Feast of Saint Michael, patron saint of police. Since 1861, 151 Queensland police officers have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.
