Angling to rid lakes of pest
FISHERS both young and older are excited about the annual tilapia tournament at Warrina Lakes next month.
Organisers of the free, family-friendly fishing competition are inviting the community to join the fight against invasive species by helping remove tilapia from Warrina Lakes.
Held during the spring school holidays from Thursday 1 October to Saturday 3 October, the tournament is a fun community event with an important environmental purpose.
Mayor Teresa Millwood said the event was “a fantastic opportunity for locals and visitors to get involved in protecting our waterways while enjoying a free, family-friendly event during the school holidays”.
“Every tilapia removed from Warrina Lakes helps reduce the pressure on our native species and improves the health of our local ecosystem,” she said.
“I encourage everyone to come along, register and be part of this important community effort.”
A regional council spokeswoman said by catching tilapia, participants were helping to reduce the impact of the invasive pest species on local waterways and native aquatic life. “Tilapia pose a serious threat to freshwater ecosystems,” she said.
“They are voracious eaters, feeding on plants, insects and small native fish.
“A single tilapia can produce hundreds of young in one season, allowing populations to grow rapidly and outcompete native species.
“They also damage waterways by stirring up mud while nesting, which destroys habitat for native fish and other aquatic life.
“One of the reasons tilapia are so problematic is also what makes them easy to catch. They will readily take a range of bait including corn, bread, worms and pellets.”

All ages are welcome, however, children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are encouraged to bring their fishing gear, hat, sunscreen and water bottle, camping chair and enjoy the opportunity to reel in great prizes while making a positive contribution to the local environment.
“Whether you are a seasoned angler or just keen to cast a line, the tilapia tournament offers a great chance to enjoy the outdoors, test your fishing skills and support an important community effort to protect local waterways,” the spokeswoman said.
