Another blow to QCWA
STILL reeling from the devastating fire that destroyed their beloved hall in March, the QCWA Flying Fish Point branch has suffered another blow, with two break-ins at their cottage while it awaits repairs.

The first was just one day after the fire, when an offender enlarged an already broken window to gain entry.
The second break-in involved a dryer stolen from the outside laundry after access was gained through an unsecured sliding window.
QCWA Flying Fish Point president Debbie Blennerhassett said the setbacks had been difficult for members already grieving the loss of their hall.
“These setbacks certainly are deflating, but we are trying to remain positive moving forward,” she said.
Prior to the fire, the branch had been experiencing a period of positive momentum.
The branch had applied for a grant to repair the cottage stumps, secured funding for new chairs, received a grant to replace the hall louvres and were planning to install airconditioning in both buildings.
Innisfail State College had also offered student volunteers for gardening and painting projects.
There is now some progress on the rebuild, with the group receiving confirmation that a builder has been appointed and demolition is scheduled for mid-May.
QCWA ladies are known for their resilience, as well as supporting others in the face of adversity, but now the group is reliant on community support, especially during this rebuilding phase. Despite the challenges, the branch’s determination remains strong and members continue to demonstrate the camaraderie and spirit that defines the group.

The branch recently received a generous donation of items from Australia Post’s Innisfail Post Shop, as well as a $500 contribution from Member for Hill Shane Knuth MP. In true QCWA spirit, the group has shared part of the donation with QCWA Silkwood to support their upcoming ‘Christmas in July’ high tea.
Looking ahead, QCWA Flying Fish Point plans to host a cent sale later in the year, a ‘Remember the Hall’ community event and an aged-care information session.
Members are also baking slices for the Friends of the Hospital Foundation Cent Sale at Innisfail State College on 24 May, with two volunteers assisting on the day.
The QCWA continues to welcome newcomers for a cuppa, a chat and one of their famous scones. Men and community members are also encouraged to drop in.
The group is currently meeting at the Flying Fish Point Guide Hut on Elizabeth Street. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month from 9am-11.30am, with craft days on the first, third and fifth Thursdays.
