Bay road re-opens
BINGIL Bay residents are now able to drive to and from Mission Beach via their normal coastal route again along Alexander Drive, with the road being re-opened last week following a heavy rain event in December and further falls since.

A large landslip of about 10,000 tonnes of material from the steep embankment next to the road caused its closure for nearly four weeks.
Motorists were only able to access Bingil Bay via the alternative route of El Arish Mission Beach Rd and Bingil Bay Rd, adding an extra two kilometres each way to the trip.
Road repair and clearance crews were able to remove enough of the slip material to re-open a single lane was for a few days in January.
But Alexander Drive had to be fenced off again to all traffic when about 400-500 tonnes of mud moved during heavy rain on Australia Day within the existing work area above the road.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council broke the news of the re-opening to residents via its Facebook page.
“The road is open and the first car is through,” the post said.
“Alexander Drive has reopened to traffic this afternoon (Thursday 29 January) following clean-up works after heavy rainfall on Monday night.
“Crews cleared the road and reopened drainage, allowing the road to safely reopen.
“A big thank you to council crews and contractors who were on site and worked quickly to clear the area and get the road reopened safely for the community.”
Traffic is currently operating under single-lane conditions with traffic lights on a blind corner.
Council says drivers are urged to follow traffic signals and signage to ensure safety, and that the site will continue to be closely monitored, particularly during wet weather.
“Thank you to the Mission Beach and Bingil Bay community for your patience and cooperation.”
