Bigfoot saves rainforest
INNISFAIL local author and photographer Sharon Skewes is set to launch her latest children’s book ‘Bigfoot Saves the Rainforest’.

Ms Skewes’ journey into writing and photography began during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020.
“I felt helpless, like many others. That’s when I started identifying my creative soul and expressing self-awareness through what I could do,” she said.
When travel restrictions lifted, a new world opened for her.
She began capturing Australia’s landscapes and wildlife through photography, weaving stories that celebrate the history and culture of the places she visited.
This passion has since inspired her to write six books, each combining imaginative storytelling with her stunning photography.
Her latest creation Bigfoot Saves the Rainforest draws inspiration from the cassowaries of Far North Queensland. Sharon spent five years photographing cassowaries across Etty Bay, El Arish, Lacey Creek, Mission Beach and South Mission Beach, capturing both males and females in their natural habitats.
“People often asked me to publish a book about cassowaries and include my photography,” she explained.
“So I did – complete with a fun and educational twist.”
In the story, Bigfoot and his dad trek through the rainforest singing their catchy song:
“Let’s poop to the right, poop to the left, and poop until you have no more to poop poop - ditty poop left.”

The playful tune highlights how cassowaries help disperse seeds and support rainforest regeneration.
Beyond the humour, Ms Skewes hopes her book encourages families to think about wildlife conservation.
“We can all help, whether by volunteering or donating,” she said.
“Many of Queensland’s national parks face challenges, from funding pressures to lack of volunteers.”
Her earlier works include whimsical titles such as ‘The Hermit Crab Was Someone’s Home’, ‘The Caterpillar on the Purple’, and ‘The Eagle Bathing in Mission Beach Water!’
Each blends photography with a touch of magic, helping children learn about nature while keeping their sense of wonder alive.
“I’m inspired by both children and adults who remind me that our beliefs should have no boundaries, and of course, I always use my trusted Canon 90D camera,” Ms Skewes said.
Meet Sharon at the launch on Saturday, 18 October from 9am to 11am at Anita’s Gift Shop, 37 Edith Street, Innisfail.
