Cassowary Council Regional Council says it received 164 contributions from 147 participants through its website – two-thirds of them Kurrimine Beach residents – after asking the public to “help shape future car-trailer parking” for the new ramp.

One option under its plans includes using much of the adjacent Taifalos Park for vehicle and trailer parking – and another included using land taken up by the existing council-run caravan park on the north side of the boat ramp.

Council undertook community consultation on the future use of the caravan park land and submissions closed more than a month ago.

It took to social media over the past fortnight to update the community on the feedback, outlining what it had heard from ratepayers and visitors.

“A general desire to improve car and trailer parking in support of the upgraded boat ramp,” was one of the points in the council post.

“Recognition of Taifalos Park as a valued community space,” was another item on the list, as well as “a range of views on the future of the caravan park, with many wanting it retained, while others supported its use to help meet parking demand.”

Council said there were also some suggestions in the submissions “to explore a combined approach, using both Taifalos Park and the caravan park during peak periods,” and the “importance of safe traffic flow, accessibility and functionality.”

Despite consultations having closed, one couple used the Facebook post opportunity to comment: “Couldn’t Taifalos Park be extended south of the playground? There’s a lot of waterfront area that is not presently being utilised, this area could then be used for the fishing comp and other community events, then the caravan park could stay where it is and continue to bring money into the community.”

Council has not given an estimated date of when final car and trailer parking designs and planning will be made.

Its website says “council will review all feedback alongside technical assessments to refine the landside layout, including parking, access and overall functionality.

“This work will help inform the next stage of design and future planning for the area. We will continue to keep the community updated as the project progresses.”

Work by a contractor on the $3.5 million state-funded upgraded double lane boat ramp itself is scheduled to start in May.
