Call out for flood yarns
THE community is being asked to share their flood experiences as Cassowary Coast Regional Council updates the region’s flood modelling.
A council spokeswoman said the council was updating the model using new data, including information from Tropical Cyclone Jasper in 2023 and the February 2025 floods.
“Flood models help us understand how water behaves during flood events, including where it flows, how deep it gets and how long it lasts,” she said.
“Improving this model will help council better understand flood risks and plan for the future.
“To support this work, residents are encouraged to share photos, videos, flood marks or observations, including water depth, extent and how long it took to recede.
“This community input will help improve the accuracy of the updated model, ensuring it reflects real flood behaviour across the Cassowary Coast.
“The updated model will inform Council’s future Flood Risk Management Plan, supporting land-use planning, infrastructure decisions and emergency response.
“The model update is expected to be completed in June 2026, with community consultation closing on 30 April 2026.”
Cassowary Coast Mayor Teresa Millwood said the coast was “the wettest region in Australia and we know the reality of flooding better than most”.
“Now we need our community to step up and be part of the solution,” she said.

Residents can also visit local libraries where staff can assist with submissions.
