Local rugby league club, the Tully Tigers, teamed up with the Tully Support Centre and the Tully Rotary Club to host a candle-lit ceremony that also included crowd participation.

Spectators were asked to stand and observe a minute silence while the players from Tigers and Cairns Kangaroos formed a guard of honour in the background. To mark the occasion the players wore purple socks.

The socks were provided by Tully Support Centre and the Tully Rotary Club and was the brain-child of Cr Tschui.

Prior to the silent reflection, Cr Tschui said “tonight, as we light these candles, we honour the survivors and remember those who have lost their lives because of domestic violence. The act of lighting a candle represents hope – a reminder that we can make a difference and every life matters”.

“Domestic violence is not just about physical abuse, it is emotional, psychological and financial harm that can have deep, invisible scars,” she said.
