Church shutting down

MOURILYAN’S Catholic Church is shutting its doors for good after nearly 90 years, with the Catholic Diocese of Cairns blaming dwindling congregation numbers, the building’s condition and a lack of priests.

The final Mass decommissioning Christ the King Church, Mourilyan is on Sunday, 1 November.

In a statement, the Diocese of Cairns said the church was being formally closed and decommissioned following “a period of careful discernment and consultation”.

“This decision has been made in response to local pastoral and practical considerations, including changing community needs, the age and ongoing requirements of the building and the responsible stewardship of diocesan resources,” the statement said.

“The Catholic community in the area continues to be well served through several active churches located nearby within the Innisfail parish, ensuring ongoing access to Mass, the sacraments, pastoral care and parish life.

“The church remains an important part of the region’s Catholic story.

“For generations, it has been a place of prayer, celebration and community life, with many local families contributing to its history and legacy.

“The faith, dedication and memories of those who worshipped there will continue to be valued and remembered.

“We recognise that this decision may be deeply emotional for those with strong personal and family ties to the church.

“We honour the many parishioners, clergy, volunteers and families who have cared for and sustained this faith community throughout its history and we give thanks for the enduring legacy they leave behind.

“While the building will no longer operate as a church, the Catholic community remains active and continues to be supported through the wider Innisfail parish network.

“The diocese is committed to accompanying parishioners through this transition with care, compassion and gratitude, while honouring the rich heritage and cherished memories of the Mourilyan Catholic community.”

The diocese did not say what will happen to the building and property at 10 Mourilyan Harbour Rd.

The final Mass will be the Feast of All Saints at 11am with Bishop Joseph Caddy presiding. It will be followed by a light lunch and the opportunity to share stories and memories of this church which opened in 1937.

Photos are being sought to create memory boards, so community members are asked to contact the parish centre if they have any photos which will be copied and the originals returned to their owners.

For seating and catering purposes, those attending are asked to contact the Innisfail parish centre on 4046 5255.
