Clean up the town
INNISFAIL is getting ready for a spruce up, with a call-out for locals to lend a hand.
The Cassowary Coast Waste Action Group (WAG) is hosting the Innisfail Spring Clean on Sunday 30 August, inviting the whole community to roll up their sleeves, enjoy a morning outdoors and help brighten parks, walking paths and public spaces across town.
Volunteers will meet at Warrina Lakes at 8.30am, with the clean up running until 11am, followed by a free sausage sizzle, fresh fruit, tea and coffee.
Organisers said the event was open to everyone.
“This is a fantastic way for people of all ages to give something back to the community,” they said.
“Whether you come on your own, with friends or bring the whole family, every pair of hands makes a real difference.”
The group encourages families to join in, with each group allocated its own area to clean. An adult must accompany children under the age of 15.
For safety reasons, the clean up will focus on parks and footpaths only, with roadside areas excluded.
An officially registered Clean Up Australia event, participants need to register individually, to for volunteer insurance cover. Register online, beforehand or on the morning.
Collected 10 cent containers go to the Johnstone River Community Gardens, while recovered scrap metal goes to recycling.
Volunteers should wear enclosed shoes, a hat and sun safe clothing.
Gloves and rubbish bags come provided, with families encouraged to bring smaller gloves for children and any spare bags.
If participants find dumped items too large to remove, they can report them directly to Cassowary Coast Regional Council using the Snap Send Solve App.
Organisers recommend downloading the free app before arriving.
