Close contests and standout performances on the course

WET weather conditions did not stop a string of tight finishes at Innisfail Golf Club, with three recent competitions producing close contests and standout performances across the field.

A heavy course kept numbers down for the 18 hole Stableford on 27 June, but Steven Marsh handled the conditions best, topping the day with 39 points. Adam Summers followed on 36, with John McCarthy close behind on 35.

The monthly medal single stroke 18-hole competition on 4 July proved even tougher, with only three players improving their handicap. Keean Greven, Ryan Turnbull and Luke Peters all finished tied on -1, but Mr Greven secured the win on a countback after a gritty round in persistent wet weather.

By 11 July the course was still saturated after the show left town, yet golfers were eager to contest the 18 hole Stableford. The morning groups battled through the worst of the conditions, with Jack Johnston, Luke Peters, John McCarthy and Mick Wilkinson all tied on 35 points. Colin Bidgood edged them out with 36.

The afternoon field produced another tight finish. Caine Cockle posted 35 points, Jake Cockle and Bob Butorac finished on 36, while Barry Scott rose above the pack with 37 points to claim the win.
