Cup clash ends in draw
A VOCAL crowd at Tully Showgrounds was treated to one of the most thrilling Ken Hamill Rugby League Cup clashes yet, as Tully State School and St Clare’s, Tully played out an epic draw in the 11th instalment of the much-loved rivalry on 1 August.
With Tully State School lifting the trophy last year, anticipation was high for another fierce contest in the A-grade curtain raiser, played over two 25 minute halves.
St Clare’s opened the scoring before Tully State School responded with three tries to take an eight-point lead. Both sides crossed again, sending Tully State School into the break ahead 16-8.
St Clare’s came out firing in the second half, levelling the scores at 16-16 with two quick tries.
The match became a gripping see sawing affair as Tully State School edged ahead with a four pointer, only for St Clare’s to strike late and lock the game at 20-20, a result that perfectly reflected the determination and spirit shown by both teams.
The cup honours Ken Hamill, a former Tully State School teacher who began coaching rugby league in the Cassowary Coast district in the mid-1990s.
The concept for the trophy was created by Chris Cattarossi, principal of Silkwood State School, with the first match played in 2015.
Hamill, now teaching in Mackay, again made a special appearance to watch the contest that bears his name.
Tully State School teacher and rugby league tragic Shane Muriata, who first met Hamill 16 years ago, said Hamill shaped the way he approached coaching.
“We used to play rugby league to win and make good teams, but he taught me how to use the sport as a positive outlet for young players, teaching commitment, teamwork and discipline through training and game days,” Muriata said.
He praised both sides for their effort.
“The Tully State School team coached by Jordy McGill was looking to go back to back, but St Clare’s, coached by former Tully Tigers player and PE teacher Jonny Hughes, had other ideas,” he said.
Muriata highlighted standout performances from Jeremy, Nate and young gun Nooon, and named Maddison Clifford his MVP. “She’s such a hard working player in both attack and defence, and a humble student who shows great respect for everyone.”
