Cutters score 1-0 in hard-earned clash against Bulls
THE Innisfail Cutters finally opened their 2026 campaign in style, securing a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Mareeba United at Borzi Park last Saturday.

After having their opening two fixtures washed out due to torrential rain, the Cutters were simply relieved to get on the park.
Their patience paid off, with a disciplined performance delivering all three points in what was their first match in five weeks.
Coach John Cavanah was delighted with the result, particularly given the challenging conditions of playing away in Mareeba.
“I’m elated. It’s our first game in five weeks and coming to Mareeba is always difficult, but coming home with a win makes the trip worthwhile,” he said.
The match proved to be a tightly contested affair, with both sides creating opportunities.
However, it was Innisfail who capitalised when Max Darveniza struck with 20 minutes remaining, giving the visitors a crucial lead.
Mareeba responded strongly, pressing hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, but a resolute defensive effort from the Cutters ensured they held firm under pressure.
The ability to withstand that late surge highlighted the team’s composure and determination in their season opener.
Cavanah acknowledged the game could have gone either way.
“We could have easily lost that game or drawn that game, but we won, and those three points at the start of the season could make all the difference at the end,” he said.
With limited match play leading into the fixture, the coach emphasised the importance of building momentum.
“Round one is all about getting players fit, getting some runs on the board and hopefully making the play-offs,” he added.
“It’s always a pleasure coming to Mareeba - it has a wonderful atmosphere.”
The Cutters will now enjoy a short Easter break before returning to action on Sunday, April 12, when they face the Edge Hill Tigers.
