Cyclones blow challengers away in opening round
THE Cassowary Coast Cyclones teams have launched their 2025/26 campaign in scorching form, with all three senior teams posting emphatic victories in the opening full round of the Cricket Far North competition.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Cyclones stamped their authority early and delivered a composed and well-rounded performance that highlighted the team’s depth.
Making his first-grade debut, Giacomo De Faveri joined the Cyclones team who took on Atherton at Loder Park. After winning the toss and electing to bat, openers Jasran Kalkat and Ranvir Singh Basra set a strong foundation with an 82-run stand.
Through the middle overs, Luke McAvoy kept the scoreboard ticking over with a fluent 54 off 51 balls, helping the Cyclones reach 8/192 from 40 overs, despite a late surge from Atherton’s Matthew Coleman, who claimed three wickets.
Defending their total, the Cyclones’ attack wasted no time making inroads. Andrew McFadden struck twice early to leave Atherton reeling at 2/15, before McAvoy tore through the middle order and finished with four key wickets.
Nosaina Pokana applied pressure and snared three late wickets, while Kade Corby chipped in with one which saw Atherton bundled out for just 100, sealing a commanding win for the Cyclones.
