Family rivalry rules

A FATHER and son rivalry stole the spotlight at the Ray Howarth Memorial Half Moon Bay Open on 30-31 May, with young gun Caine Cockle once again outplaying his dad Jake to extend his lead in their friendly family tally.

While both golfers battled through a tough opening day, Caine’s brilliant second round form saw him burn the edges for birdies and finish ahead of two well known Cairns players, Oliver Duncan and Matt Spilsbury.

Jake managed to out drive his son a few times on day one, but Caine’s composed Sunday performance marred only by a single bad hole proved too strong. After two opens, the scoreboard now reads: Caine 2, Jake 0.

In the Half Moon Junior Challenge, Keanu Baptiste impressed after stepping up to the six hole modified division, producing a fantastic round to claim the nett winner title and a swag of prizes.

Last month, Keean and Keira Greven competed in the two day Ravenshoe Junior Open, where Keira took out the nett win in the girls’ nine hole modified division.

Luke Newman is running coaching sessions for junior players of all skill levels.
