Fight to save van spot

THE owners of Kranky Kransky have vowed not to give up the fight over the popular food van, saying they’ve collected hundreds of signatures in support of them staying where they are at Mission Beach.

After three years of serving up sausages from the van in the car park of the Mission Beach Information Centre, Bronwen and Norbert Heser were told recently by council that their permit to operate would not be renewed from 31 January 2026.

But they say they’ll soon present a petition containing well over 500 signatures to council.

“They wrote us a permit from one year to the next,” Bronwen Heser told The Observer.

“But they never said from the original date that we were offered that site, that it would be temporary,” she said.

Included in the support for the food van are letters and signatures from, not just customers, but also other food businesses in town which, according to the Hesers, reflects how their business does not rival any others in the newly-refurbished Mission Beach CBD.

Norbert Heser said that he simply couldn’t understand council’s motives for wanting the sausage van gone from the unique spot, which features car parking spaces, access to the beach and public toilets.

He says he doesn’t believe any other nearby business has complained about competition.

“Nobody else does German sausages in town,” Mr Heser said.

But there are several other outlets in Mission Beach that serve coffee and it is possible the food van might be seen as a rival in that area.

“I think it’s nice if you come to the town, go into the information centre, get your brochures, have a coffee.”

The Hesers are hoping the petition will be presented at council’s final meeting of the year on Thursday 11 December.
