Fishos’ loo set for upgrade
TO SOME it’s just another toilet block but to many others, it’s a much-missed amenity at one of the Cassowary Coast’s most beautiful seaside spots.

Located in the car park of the South Mission beach boat ramp, also the head of the Kennedy Walking Track, the small but regularly used toilet block was shut after a deluge brought by Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 caused a landslip and rockfall on the slope behind the building.
“The toilet block was not significantly damaged by the rockfall associated with the Jasper cyclone, but Council decided to close it due to the residual risk that the unstabilised slope hazard posed to the public,” a Cassowary Coast Regional Council spokesperson said in a statement to The Observer.
Council plans to reopen the toilet block once the slope adjacent has been stabilised. It says it has identified a preferred tenderer and is working towards a construction start date in early November.
“If we get favourable weather, we aim to complete construction by late December 2025,” they said.
“Works include cleaning up debris, removing loose rock and installing rock bolts and slope-mesh to reduce the risk of ongoing rockfall.
“After construction, Council will move to reopen the toilet block.”
In the meantime, the nearest similar amenity for boaties, visitors and walkers, another is available 1.5km north, near the boat club at South Mission Beach.
“Council understands the inconvenience of closing the toilet block, and we thank the community for their patience while we work to stabilise the slope and ensure the safety of community members and visitors.”
