THE boating and fishing communities in Mission Beach and Cardwell have both been offered glimmers of hope in council’s 2026-27 budget.

A local campaign to revamp and repair Mission Beach’s Perry Harvey Jetty and the recognition by Cassowary Coast Regional Council this year that Cardwell Jetty needs major fixing could have some tangible results this financial year.

While still fairly vague and general, in the budget document’s capital works funding breakdown, a moderate amount has been allocated for all of the region’s ‘marine facilities’ – of $1.39 million for this financial year.

But whether that is enough to cover repairs and the replacement of stairs at Perry Harvey Jetty and fairly major work on the structure, including pylons, at Cardwell Jetty remains to be seen in coming weeks and months.

It’s also not known if any other facilities in council’s large portfolio of six jetties and wharves and 16 boat ramps need work and how much of the budgeted amount will be needed for those.

Council already alluded at a meeting earlier in the year that Perry Harvey and Cardwell jetties were virtually competing for funding to fix them, with particularly high priority “risks” at Cardwell jetty.

Council also maintains a firmly held official position that the Mission Beach jetty, named after one of the region’s tourism pioneers, is primarily a fishing platform, which could very well mean Cardwell gets the priority – and the money.
