Going with the flow

THE water levels will drop in the Tully River for four weeks in August as CleanCo undertakes planned dewatering works at Kareeya power station.

For a month, from 4 August, water levels in the Tully River will fall as CleanCo dewaters its Kareeya power station (inset). However, seasonal and natural catchment flows will continue during the works until 5 September. Picture: Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

The works are scheduled at the power station from 4 August to 5 September 2026 as part of its regular maintenance program.

A CleanCo spokeswoman said the dewatering process involved removing water from the power station to allow inspections, maintenance and any required repairs to be completed in areas that were normally inaccessible.

“This planned activity is carried out every five years and plays an important role in supporting the ongoing safe and reliable operation and long-term performance of CleanCo’s generation assets,” she said.

“At the beginning of the dewatering process, the community may notice a gradual decrease in Tully River water levels.

“River levels are expected to remain low for the duration of the works as part of the normal dewatering process.

“However, seasonal and natural catchment flows will continue to enter the river.

“Once the outage is complete, river levels will return to normal.

“CleanCo apologises for any inconvenience these planned works may cause and appreciates the community’s understanding while this important maintenance activity is carried out.

“Community members with questions about the Kareeya dewatering are encouraged to contact CleanCo via email at community@cleancoqld.com.au.”
