Golfers look ahead to Innisfail Open this weekend

WITH the Innisfail Open teeing off this weekend, golfers are hoping the fine form shown across recent competitions carries through, and none more so than David Swaine, who stormed home with a superb 63 nett to claim last week’s single stroke event.

The Wednesday all sporters on 12 August saw Craig Alman in top touch, winning with 28 points, ahead of Jim Ferguson on 26 points and Alan Cooper on 24 points. Alman also claimed the nearest to the pin.

Friday sporters on 14 August produced another tight contest, with Alan Woodhouse taking the win on 20 points, followed by Jeff McGrath (19 points) and John Abbott (18 points). The field was smaller for the single stroke 18 hole competition on 15 August, with many players preparing for Innisfail Turf Club’s Banana Industry Race Day, but the scoring was anything but quiet.

Visiting golfers from Victoria, Geoff, Phil, and Joanne (surnames withheld) enjoyed the course and hinted they may play in another couple of local events before they hit the road again.

Strong rounds came early, with Rodney Green carding 69 nett, Luke Peters rolling in putts for 68 nett, and Damien King leading the morning with 67 nett.

But the afternoon belonged to David Swaine, who delivered a standout performance: a four over front nine and a personal best 85 off the stick, converting to an impressive 63 nett and the clubhouse lead.

Kevin Walsh also produced a solid round to tie with Green, but Swaine’s consistency across the day secured the win.
