Despite absorbing heavy pressure early, the Cassowary Coast side took control and blew the game open in the second half.

Denan Anderson and Nathan Vue each crossed for doubles, with further tries to Zyon Toms, Case Durighello, Cohn Creed and Tyrell Forbes. Durighello and Kade Corby added one conversion each, while captain Tama Wilson slotted three.

Coach Brayden Huey said the team’s steady improvement over the past month is now showing on the scoreboard.

“St Anthony’s challenged us early, but I was impressed with how the boys never gave up and then ran away with the game,” he said.

“At half-time it was 16-4, so to hold them scoreless in the second half was an impressive result.”

The team will now enjoy a well-earned week off, before heading to Townsville on 26 May for the qualifying final.

Their round four win followed another strong performance in round three, where Good Counsel’s open boys’ rugby league team kept their unbeaten run alive with an emphatic 40-6 victory over Ingham State High School on 6 May.

Forbes and Archer Ingram both scored doubles, while Ben de Paauw, Anderson, Corby and Durighello added one try each. Wilson kicked three from six, with Forbes adding another.

Good Counsel again had to withstand an early surge from Ingham’s powerful forward pack before taking control. Senior players Forbes and Wilson led from the front, while dummy-half de Paauw worked tirelessly in the middle.

The school’s under-15 side also impressed, overcoming a broken-down bus before powering to a 34-0 win over Ingham State High School. Captain Tony ‘Bao’ Pham produced a second-half hat-trick, with Jake Stephenson scoring a double and tries to Oli Edwards and Ryan Aquilina. Cooper Healey added three conversions. In other results, the under-15s claimed another victory, while in the local derby, St Teresa’s College, Abergowrie, held on for a narrow win over Gilroy Santa Maria College, Ingham.
