Great wins by Good Counsel
GOOD Counsel College has burst onto the Townsville Blackhawks Schoolboy Trophy scene in emphatic fashion, opening their campaign with back-to-back dominant wins at Callendar Park to announce themselves as genuine contenders.

In their debut match on 23 April, the only Cassowary Coast school in the competition recovered from a slow start and conceding the first try, to completely overwhelm St Teresa’s College, Abergowrie, storming home 42-4.
Tyrell Forbes crossed twice, while Peter Solien, Denan Anderson, Tama Wilson, Clayten Bensi, Zyon Toms and Kade Corby all adding to the tally. Wilson was sharp off the tee, landing five conversions.
Good Counsel backed it up in round two with another commanding performance, defeating Gilroy Santa Maria College, Ingham 40-12 on 29 April.
The left edge was electric, with winger Marlion Swain bagging a first-half hat-trick and Archer Ingram scoring a double. Zyon Toms, Kade Corby and centre Denan Anderson also crossed, with Anderson earning man of the match honours.
Coach Brayden Huey said he couldn’t be happier with the team’s start.
“St Teresa’s are a great attacking side, so holding them to four points was outstanding,” he said.
“To concede just 16 points across two games is something the boys should be proud of. Our defence has really stood out.”
Huey praised the physicality of forwards Noah Balderson, Peter Solien and Nathan Vue and the finishing ability of backs Forbes, Anderson and Swain. Captain Tama Wilson also earned praise for his leadership and consistency, but the whole team contributed to the win.
“The boys just need to put together a full 60-minute performance,” Huey said.
“We haven’t played Ingham State High School before, so we’re not sure what to expect, but if we stick to our style, I’m confident we can get victory. Today’s game is crucial as a win secures us a finals spot.”
The Blackhawks Schoolboy Trophy, now in its third year, provides a high-level rugby league pathway for independent secondary schools just below the Aaron Payne Cup tier.
The northern pool features Good Counsel College, St Teresa’s College, Abergowrie, Gilroy Santa Maria College, Ingham State High School and St Anthony’s Townsville.
