High and dry

THE recently-listed Hotel Euramo has been called many things including ‘iconic’ and ‘a classic Queensland pub’, but there’s one name that has stuck and is now fixed to the building.

A flood event at Euramo in December 2023 resulted in images that went around the world and put the small community on the map.

Because they couldn’t drop in as usual with their utes and cars, customers turned up in their boats at the front of the flooded pub yard to show they could still relax amidst the deluge and enjoy a cold beverage.

The name ‘Euramo Yacht Club’ was devised and now big brewer Castlemaine Perkins – XXXX – has created permanent signs to suit.

“I’ve put the signage up and they’ve actually called it the Euramo Yacht Club on the signs as well,” publican Ollie Muzic told The Observer.

“So Google started that out, yeah. Google changed our name from Hotel Euramo to Euramo Yacht Club,” she said.

So, why is the hotel selling?

After achieving her five-year goal of building up the pub’s business – it’s now doing 10 times the trade it was when she bought it in 2021 – Ollie and her husband Dave are ready for some “quiet time”.

“My husband is 65 now,” she said. “He’s got his own business as well, so he will continue doing that until we settle down and get a routine and then he’ll probably close down his business.”

Ms Muzic attributes the successful rise of the pub’s patronage to a couple of factors, the main one being that she had a proper kitchen installed and made pub food a highlight, as well as fencing off the beer garden.

“Our staff are great. We have three bar staff and five in the kitchen,” she said.

“I have taken the hotel from where it was doing a very small trade to now doing a very big trade for the area, considering that we don’t have a community around us, you know, like the El Arish Tavern and the Silkwood Hotel and whatnot – they all have communities around them, whereas we do not.”

As well, she says the customers are really what make the friendly pub tick.

“I have got some terrific, and, I mean, fantastic customers,” Ms Muzic said.

“I have got the most amazing customers. They range from 18-year-olds to 85-year-olds or even beyond that.

“I’ve always believed that if somebody is here at my hotel, it’s because they want to be here.

“You know, if you’re in town at the local pub or something, it’s because it’s convenient, but because I haven’t got a township around me, people are here because they want to be here.”

One of the key events they’ve built up is the annual ‘Boar & Barra Bash’, normally held on the May long weekend and attracting competitive pig hunters and fishers, many of whom camp there.

As yet, the Hotel Euramo-Euramo Yacht Club doesn’t have any solid offers, which might seem a bit strange given what Ms Muzic considers to be an attractive price of $850,000 plus stock at value.

“Which surprises me, because it’s for sale roughly the same price as a house, yeah? But in saying that these things I know it takes time and clearly, it’s going to take a little bit more time than I maybe anticipated.”

Details of the sale can be found on at least two major commercial real estate platforms.

Hotel broker Scott Williams says: “The Hotel Euramo is a real lifestyle business with a residence. Close to Cairns and the various waterways of the Tully Heads area, the hotel draws people, clubs and families from miles around.”
