Innisfail United close season
INNISFAIL United’s premier men capped off their season in style, delivering a confident 4-2 home win over Southside Comets at Steve Corica Oval on 26 August, before backing it up with a hard fought 2-2 draw against the same opponents three days later at Walker Road, Edmonton.
Julian Sujana led the charge with a double, while Glen Kalchiwota and Ethan Crossland added one goal each in the final home match.
Coach John Cavanah praised the squad’s commitment, noting the rare consistency in player availability.
“We have won three games on the trot, with all selected players making all three games, a first this season,” he said.
In the away clash on 29 August, Innisfail again struck first through Sujana and held the lead for most of the match.
Southside equalised before Cameron Epong produced a well taken goal late in the game, only for Southside to level once more, sealing the 2-2 draw.
“Again, we were unlucky not to pick up all three points but have managed to finish the season on a positive note,” Cavanah said.
The club’s success extended well beyond the premier men. Innisfail’s under-23 women wrapped up a stellar season, finishing with 17 wins, one draw and just two losses.
Their remarkable tally of 84 goals scored and only 17 conceded placed them second on the ladder, just one point behind Edge Hill, whom they faced in the semi final.
Across the senior and junior ranks, the Cutters enjoyed a strong finish to the regular season.
The division 1 team placed fourth and met Port Douglas FC in their semi-final, the division 2 side also finished fourth and faced Stratford, while the under-13 FQPL team secured fourth place and played Southside in the preliminary final.
In total, three senior teams and one junior team advanced to the semi-finals, which kicked off on 4 September at Endeavour Park in Cairns and continued the following day.
