Innisfail wins Tully Classic Open Fours tournament
A BRIEF rain interruption wasn’t enough to dampen spirits at Innisfail Bowls Club on 2 September, with the weather clearing just in time for a thrilling start to the 2027 Innisfail Ladies Singles Championship.
The opening round delivered a nail biter, as Maisie Smith edged out Jan Dunn in a tight 25-23 victory.
Social bowls also produced competitive match ups.
Helen Paterson, Kath O’Brien and Daphne Kirkman claimed a 15-12 win over Louise Hoskins, Carol McRobbie and Diana O’Brien, while Marilyn Allen and Cheryl Higgins secured a narrow 8-7 victory over Christine Pascoe and Margaret Johnston/Julie Connors in a low scoring contest.
The following day, a team of Innisfail ladies travelled to Gordonvale Bowls Club for the Tropical Far North Queensland District Ladies Bowling Association President’s Day, continuing the club’s strong presence in regional events.
Competitive play resumed at Thursday afternoon social bowls on 3 September, where skip Mark Elliott, alongside Joe Van Tienen, Greg McDonald and Peter Broccardo, secured a 23-22 win.
They finished just one point ahead of the team skipped by Gordon Goes, with Steve Stoter, Matt Aucello and Peter Robertson. Innisfail bowlers also shone on the wider stage, with the team of Mark Elliott, Geoff Johnston, Rod McMillan and Blake Moreland finishing undefeated after five games to claim overall victory at the Tully Classic Open Fours on 30 August.
The tournament showcased strong competition, with the Innisfail side emerging as deserved champions.
