Cairns Mayor Amy Eden has joined FNQ Legacy representatives at 60-80 Cheviot Street, Smithfield to mark the agreement, which will pave the way for a permanent support facility for veterans’ families.

The proposed Legacy House will provide emergency accommodation, crisis support, wellbeing programs and opportunities for community connection under one roof.

The project aims to support families across Far North Queensland, which is home to more than 11,000 veterans.

FNQ Legacy executive officer Rebecca Milliner said the lease signing marked an important milestone, bringing the project closer to reality.

“Standing on this land, Legacy House stops being an idea and starts becoming real. Behind every brick is a veteran’s family who will walk through that door and know they are not alone,” she said.

Council has provided the land for the development and the Queensland Government has committed $1 million to the project.
