Landslip works to start
A MAJOR embankment stabilisation effort is scheduled to start in the dry season at Bingil Bay following last December’s huge landslip which closed Alexander Drive for a few weeks.

A large landslip during heavy monsoonal downpours resulted in about 10,000 tonnes of material from the steep embankment having to be removed from the road.
While the major clearance work was being conducted, residents and other motorists had to access Bingil Bay via the alternative route of El Arish Mission Beach Rd and Bingil Bay Rd, adding an extra two kilometres each way to the trip.
Road repair and clearance crews were able to remove enough of the slip material to re-open a single lane for a few days in January, before the road had to be fenced off again to all traffic when about 400-500 tonnes of mud moved during heavy rain on Australia Day within the existing work area above the road.
Traffic currently continues to operate under single-lane conditions with traffic lights on a blind corner of Alexander Drive.
A picture taken from the water recently of the slip and a car on Alexander Drive below it shows the scale of the task ahead.
Cassowary council says the work will be funded by both the state and federal governments under disaster recovery arrangements and is part of a broader $14 million reconstruction program following the December 2025 event. “The stabilisation design for the Alexander Drive landslip site is currently being finalised, with construction expected to commence mid-2026,” a council spokeswoman said.
“The restoration works are subject to funding from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.”
Further wet season conditions are being closely watched in the meantime, as the site remains exposed before the stabilisation construction gets underway.
“While recent wet weather has not impacted the repair timeline, council has increased monitoring of the site to keep an eye on the conditions,” the spokeswoman said.
