Judges Bernard Kasey and Jennifer Payne described the photograph as “an all-round brilliant capture,” praising its vibrant colour contrast, crisp focus and beautifully balanced composition.

This photograph also took out the wet tropics flora and fauna category.

The exhibition, which officially opened last month, drew 101 entries from across the Cassowary Coast, Cairns and Townsville, the largest number in its history.

Photographers competed across 13 categories, from landscapes and seascapes to macro, travel, underwater, portraits, youth divisions and more.

Mr Kasey and Ms Payne said the calibre of work made judging “extremely difficult,” noting that even entrants who didn’t take home awards should be “very proud” of their submissions.

Following opening night, exhibitors were treated to a judges’ critique session offering insights, tips and technical advice.

Comments on winning entries highlighted strong composition, simplicity, sharpness, colour balance and the ability to draw viewers into the moment.

The exhibition is open daily from 10am-2pm until 21 April, with free entry. Visitors are encouraged to view the stunning collection and cast their vote in the people’s choice award, to be announced at the close of the exhibition.
