Sandra Harris’s impassioned letter to Cassowary Coast Regional Council included a plea to preserve the iconic structure rather than let it decline.

Council recently removed stairs and adjoining platforms on the south side of the jetty after that part of the jetty was no longer deemed safe due to saltwater deterioration. There has been no commitment or budget allocation from council so far to replace the stairs.

“Thanks Sandy for your words and support of our efforts for replacement of this well used asset,” Paul Roxby said on the newspaper’s Facebook page.

“Many aspects of boating infrastructure need attention and funding,” he added.

“Well done Sandra Harris and Rona Harvey … let commonsense prevail,” Trina Hibberd posted.

Matt Dyason said: “The jetty needs upgrading to tourism specs so vehicles can drive on it to load stores etc for Dunk (Island). The sooner it happens the better it will be for tourism.”
