Eighteen months after work started on the $21.5 million project, local residents and visitors made the most of what was on offer – live music, Tai Chi, face painting, kids’ activities, belly dancing, free native tree giveaways and roving entertainment.

Local retail and food businesses provided a range of specials and activities for people of all ages were held, including creative workshops, a village green artwork tour, interactive wildlife encounters, cassowary mask making and beach activities.

A new route for the weekly ‘Paradise Run’ – a free social 5km run or 3km walk/run on Saturdays – was revealed.

Funding for the revitalisation was provided by all three levels of government – $9.7 million from the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, $7.92m of federal government money and $3.52 million of grants and subsidies from the state.

Upgrades include improved amenities, lighting, pedestrian access, shaded areas and stormwater infrastructure, as well as unique artworks and new street furniture.

Council says the improvements all helping to create a safer, more welcoming town centre for the community and visitors.

“The revitalisation project represents the first major investment in the town centre since the 1970s and it has created a more welcoming and functional space for the community,” Mayor Teresa Millwood said.

“This project has brought this iconic destination to life – unleashing its tremendous tourism potential and creating opportunities for investment, economic growth and prosperity,” she said

“The works weren’t easy, and I thank the community for sticking with us. Your resilience, patience, and the way you’ve worked with us through all the ups and downs has been fantastic.”

Federal Regional Development and Local Government Minister Kristy McBain said the completion of the Mission Beach Town Centre was “fantastic example of what can be achieved when three levels of government work together”.

Local councillor Trudy Tschui said the project hadtransformed the heart of Mission Beach.

“It’s a vibrant, welcoming, accessible and family friendly place that invites visitors and locals to linger longer,” Cr Tschui said.
