The 4km (one-way) Kennedy Walking Trail at South Mission Beach, which starts from the boat ramp car park, suffered damage to part of its boardwalk and guard railings at Lovers Beach during landslips caused by the deluges.

The trail is popular for its beach and forest walking, island views and the spotting of land and sea wildlife.

It was named after explorer Edmund Beasley Court Kennedy who landed at the spot in 1848. The trail takes walkers through from South Mission to Kennedy Bay and the Hull River.

Further to the north at Mission Beach, Cassowary Coast Regional Council has also started working on repairing and restoring the Cutten Brothers Track.

The shorter but also scenic popular trail which starts from near the Clump Point lookout and ends at Alexander Drive, winds for about 1.5km through some of the area’s last remaining lowland rainforest at sea level and connects with the Ulysses Link walking track to the south.

Councillor Trudy Tschui said the Cutten Brothers track “has been made safe and is now open for public use.”

“Ongoing works are still required, which may see the need for temporary closures to complete the restoration project,” she said.

“The timber collected has been given to Tully Men’s Shed to be used in their ongoing works. Please reach out to them if you would like to become involved with their projects,” Cr Tschui said.

In a social media post on both tracks, council said: “Works are expected to take around five weeks (weather permitting), with occasional track closures needed from time to time. Thanks for your patience while we get the tracks back up and running.”
