Meals are now prepared in the Cairns Meals on Wheels kitchen and supplied to the Innisfail group for delivery twice a week.

Innisfail Meals on Wheels is a community-based not-for-profit group and is run by dedicated volunteers who arrange delivery of freshly-cooked nutritious meals to elderly, fragile and disabled residents.

IMOW president John Kremastos said the organisation was urgently looking for more delivery drivers to join the team this month and beyond.

“Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal, as our volunteers not only provide important social connection but conduct client welfare checks. They also help clients maintain their dignity and independence.”

Currently, Innisfail Meals on Wheels is delivering 80 meals three days per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

IMOW delivers nutritious home-cooked meals catering for dietary requirements such as vegetarian, diabetic and coeliac.

This year marks the 38th anniversary since IMOW opened in their current location at Flying Fish Point Road, with the group gearing up to celebrate 50 years of service in November.

Delivery drivers and assistants are required on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am – 11am (except on public holidays).

Delivery drivers and assistants are allocated to various runs throughout the region, including Innisfail CBD, Flying Fish Point, Wangan, South Johnstone, Kurrimine Beach, Silkwood, Mena Creek, Palmerston, Goondi, Garradunga and Eubenangee.

Fuel vouchers are available for volunteer delivery drivers to offset running costs.

Volunteers experience the rewards of making a real difference, building lasting relationships, and creating a sense of belonging, knowing they are an integral part of their community.

For further information, phone 4061 1919, send a message via the Innisfail Meals on Wheels Facebook page, or call into the kitchen at 11 Flying Fish Point Road, next to Innisfail SES.

In June, the group received a financial boost with a $400 donation from FNQ Motor Group, with another donation of $200 recently handed over.

The AGM for Innisfail Meals is on September 15 at 6.30pm, and with all executive positions becoming vacant, new and enthusiastic members are needed to fill these important roles. Meetings are held once a month on Mondays and usually run for an hour.
