Netballers honour the best

INNISFAIL and District Netball Association ended their season with a celebration of grand final glory and their top achievers at Innisfail State College’s indoor sports centre.

Banana Bunch defeated Back in Attack 24-8 in the under-12 division final. Player of the final was Tori Lyons.

In the under-16 final, Girls Gone Bananas had a solid 25-19 victory over Pink Ladies. Player of the final was Leyton Genocchio.

Immortals had a thrilling one-point win over Ravens in the B-grade division final 19-18. Player of the final was Emily Quabba.

In the A-grade division final, Ignite emerged victorious with a 30-24 win over Autobots. Player of the final was Annette Lyons.

Club life members Desley Winkleman, Denise Grainger, Ann Rule, Dell Steve and Rose Fisher presented the winners and runners-up trophies.

Grand final umpires: Desley and Michelle Hogan (under 12), Annette Lyons and Kate Walker (under 16), Michelle Hogan and Kate Walker (B-grade), Stuart and Maya from Cairns (A-grade).

Each week, umpires award points for the top three players in each game, and the best and fairest trophies go to the highest point achiever with the most accumulated point totals for the season.

Player of the year awards – under-12: Mia Dillon (Banana Bunch), under-16: Lacey Suchanek (Ravens), B-grade: Mya Tauli (Immortals) and A-grade: Anita Pearson (Bad Assets).

The 12 and under rising star was Isadora Nucifora, a player who shows optimism, a willingness to learn and consistent efforts.

The Hogan family umpire’s award: Kaitlyn Onaindia for dedication, reliability, an eagerness to learn, always willing to pick up a whistle, have a go and shown a marked improvement in her umpiring skills.

Coaches award: Danielle Heron

Annette Henrickson memorial junior encouragement award: Charlotte Bull for possessing a positive attitude, consistent efforts each week and a willingness to learn.

Bessie Spiller memorial junior sportswoman of the year: Estelle Setter, who showed true sportsmanship on and off court, team spirit, playing to the best of her ability and is well respected by teammates and peers.

Cheryl Bowie memorial senior sportswoman of the year award: Lily Murphy (Bad Assets).

Amy Lawrence junior goaling average award: Lucy Moyle, who achieved the highest goal shooting average this season.

Six Innisfail and district representative teams travelled to Townville and competed in a new Queensland Country carnival, where the under-14 team finished as runner-ups, while two teams played in the junior and senior state age competitions.

IDNA players, Lucy Moyle and Zali Walker gained selection in the Far North Flames team, along with Kate Walker and Ruby Wilson (training partners).

The club acknowledged the efforts and contributions of executive committee members, players, managers, coaches, scorers, umpires, canteen staff, timekeepers, volunteers and supporters.
