New concept for Warrina
PLANS are afoot to replace a rundown former cattle shed with a fit-for-purpose visitor centre at Innisfail’s popular Warrina Lakes.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has released a proposed concept design for the well-used community space with feedback sought from the community.
The project builds on recent upgrades at Warrina Lakes, including a pump track, nature play area and carpark improvements.
Mayor Teresa Millwood said the next step was ensuring the visitor building could support the growing use of the space into the future.
“This is a much-loved community space and we know how important it is to get this right,” she said.
“We’ve seen Warrina Lakes continue to grow in popularity following recent upgrades and it’s important that our facilities keep pace with how the community is using the space.”
The existing building, which was originally a cattle shed, is ageing and was not designed for long-term public use and presents ongoing safety, compliance and maintenance challenges. Council is now exploring options to ensure the site can continue to support community use into the future.
“We’re planning for the future of Warrina Lakes and that starts with listening to our community,” Cr Millwood said.
The proposed concept design aims to retain the open, flexible feel of the current building, while improving accessibility, functionality and resilience to tropical weather conditions. Key features include a large undercover event space, flexible open and enclosed areas, improved amenities and stronger connections to the surrounding parklands.
The design also introduces new and improved facilities, including a dedicated parents’ room, supporting families and making the space more inclusive.
“We’ve looked at how people use the space now and what’s needed into the future, including features like a parents’ room that will make a real difference for families,” Cr Millwood said.
Importantly, she said, the design reflected the character of the existing structure, incorporating elements such as exposed trusses and natural tones to maintain its connection to the local environment and community identity.
Cr Millwood said consultation would play a key role in refining the design and supporting future funding opportunities.
“This feedback will help us finalise a design that we can take forward to secure external funding,” she said.
There is currently no funding for construction, with the final concept designed to support applications for state and federal government grants.
“In the meantime, council will continue to maintain the existing facility so the community can keep using the space,” Cr Millwood said.

An on-site drop-in session at Warrina Lakes is planned for tomorrow, Thursday 14 May, from 9am-11am.
