Plant a tree, save the planet
NATIONAL Tree Day is celebrating its 30-year anniversary and volunteers are being sought for tree planting today (Wednesday 22 July) at Tully Heads.
Organisers said there would be a short school planting at the Tully Heads foreshore, where students, community members and Cassowary Coast Regional Council staff would plant native trees and plants to help restore the area.
“The planting will help stabilise the foreshore, reduce erosion, improve habitat for native wildlife, increase biodiversity, and support natural protection for nearby homes during extreme weather events,” they said.
Established by Planet Ark in 1996, National Tree Day has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care initiative.
While every or any day can be Tree Day, Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day are typically held on the last Friday and Sunday of July, respectively.
Tree planters are asked to gather at the Tully Heads foreshore, at the corner of Galmahra Road and Taylor Street from 11.30 am to 1.30pm. “Please bring enclosed shoes, sun protection, water bottle and gardening gloves if you have them,” the organisers said.
