Money from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund enabled the SLSC to buy a new ‘side by side’ vehicle (SSV) for $33,404.

“This is an essential piece of rescue equipment which enables our volunteers to quickly respond to an incident anywhere along the 14-kilometre stretch of Mission Beach coastline, as well as enabling our rescue boat and patrol trailer to be safely towed on and off the beach,” Mission Beach SLSC chief training officer Mal Davison told The Observer.

“The club thanks the state government for the funding and their continued support to Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s aim of zero preventable deaths in Queensland waterways,” he said.

“This SSV replaces a similar SSV that reached its end-of -life.”

The club was among other recipients of the gambling benefit fund round 125 in the region, which also included $17,265 towards new shade covers for the Mundoo State School P&C Association, and $35,000 towards upgrading Babinda RSL Sub-Branch’s local facility.

“It’s great to see grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund have been approved for the Babinda Sub Branch RSL, Mission Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Mundoo State School,” Member for Hill, Shane Knuth said.

“They are not only vital assets to our region, but play a pivotal role in maintaining a sense of pride, education, connection and safety for our community.”

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said money from the benefit fund “goes straight back into our communities and I’m proud that this round is supporting so many dedicated organisations across the state.”
