Innisfail Turf Club spokeswoman Kellie Harrison said the event was a highlight for the region.

“The Banana Industry Race Day is one of the region’s most popular and colourful annual racing events, celebrating our proud banana-growing heritage, while bringing the community together for a huge day of racing, fashion and industry recognition,” she said.

As the Cassowary Coast is one of Australia’s major banana-producing regions, growers, packing crews and industry representatives usually turn out in force to honour the farmers, workers and families who keep the industry thriving.

“Growers and industry groups sponsor races, present trophies and use the day to acknowledge the hard work of everyone involved in banana production,” Ms Harrison said.

Racegoers can enjoy six local races, including the feature Banana Industry Cup, lively trackside entertainment and the welcoming atmosphere that makes this one of the region’s favourite country race meetings. TAB facilities, licensed bars and food stalls will operate throughout the day, while the popular banana industry lunch offers a relaxed way to enjoy the racing with friends, family or colleagues.

A major highlight is the Tropicana Bananas Fashions on the Field, celebrating bold tropical style.

This year’s theme ‘vibrant tropics’, features sunshine yellow, lush greens, papaya tones and classic chic in black and white with pops of yellow or tropical prints. Categories include little banana blossom, young banana bunch gent, tropical belle, tropical trendsetter, queen of the tropics, tropical trackside gentleman, banana bunch (couples), crown of the canopy (millinery) and backpackers banana bunch.

Racegoers are encouraged to embrace the theme and compete for the coveted title of supreme banana fashion champion. Nominations run from 1pm- 3pm, with the judging and presentations from 3pm.

After the final race, celebrations continue with live music from Slippery Riff from 5pm to 8pm.

Gates open at 11am, with the licensed bar operating from 12pm-8pm. General admission and luncheon bookings are available at www.localtickets.com.au. Updates can be found on the Innisfail Turf Club Facebook page.
