Retro diner celebrates first year
IF you have ever stepped through the doors of TJ’s Diner at 198 Edith Street, Innisfail across from Goodyear Tyres you know it is impossible not to smile.
The retro booths, the jukebox, the walls lined with vinyl records, cassette tapes from owner Troy McDonald’s personal collection and bold hand painted portraits of Tina Turner, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe created by Troy himself give the diner a vibrant 80s personality that hits you the moment you walk in.
As TJ’s celebrates its first year in business, its story and unmistakable charm are worth celebrating.
Owners Troy McDonald and James Sleep, who have called Innisfail home for the past decade, dreamed of creating something different something fun, bold, and unmistakably American.
After five successful years running Bedrock Café, they took a leap of faith, purchasing the former Goondi Hill Bakery building and pouring their savings, creativity and energy into transforming it into a true American-style diner.
Mr McDonald said the idea sparked when he saw a photo of a classic American diner.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” he said.
“I did a lot of brainstorming and research to bring the idea to life.”
His artistic flair is now part of the diner’s identity, with his paintings adorning both the interior and exterior walls. The result is a space that feels like a time capsule, warm, quirky and full of personality.
Over the past year, TJ’s has worked hard to attract more foot traffic, inviting locals and visitors to enjoy authentic homestyle fare while stepping back in time.
The diner has become a favourite stop for NQ Restorers and Fat Bastards car clubs, classic car enthusiasts and even served as the backdrop for a wedding photo shoot by local photographer Kaylee Seitter.
Of course, a diner is only as good as its food and TJ’s delivers.
The hand-pressed beef patties, slow-cooked meats, French fries and old fashioned milkshakes are the kind of homestyle comfort food that keeps people coming back.
Customer feedback says it all: “If you’re looking for an awesome breakfast, look no further,” says Gus Bonaccorso.
“Absolute awesome food,” adds Kate Kuhn.
“Great coffee and awesome service,” says Meg Guarrera.
TJ’s is proudly local. Mr Sleep is the whiz in the kitchen, while Mr McDonald takes orders, serves meals and prepares drinks. A local junior helps on weekends during busy periods.
Recent improvements include new vinyl flooring, with airconditioning next on the list.
With an all-day breakfast, a full menu of authentic American burgers, dine-in and takeaway options, and phone orders via 0414 731 424, TJ’s Diner is a vibrant addition to Innisfail’s food scene.
Open Thursday to Tuesday, it is ideal for small groups, with ample parking at the back and even a convenient drive-through.
