Running for joy at athletics
CASTOR Park, Mourilyan was buzzing with colour, energy and friendly rivalry as Cassowary Coast Athletics and Tully Athletics Club came together for an inter-club meet that delivered strong competition, personal bests and plenty of smiles.
CASTOR Park, Mourilyan was buzzing with colour, energy and friendly rivalry as Cassowary Coast Athletics and Tully Athletics Club came together for an inter-club meet that delivered strong competition, personal bests and plenty of smiles.
About 65 Cassowary Coast athletes and 20 from Tully took to the track, pushing themselves harder than usual thanks to the extra challenge of competing against another club.
The evening was filled with encouragement and camaraderie, with athletes cheering each other on across a range of events.
A second inter-club meet followed at Tully High School on 30 August, this time focusing on relays and light hearted competition between the two clubs.
Cassowary Coast Athletics president Priscilla Zupp said the meets captured everything the sport was about.
“It was wonderful seeing our kids compete against Tully, challenge themselves, cheer each other on and, most importantly, form great new friendships,” she said.
“The track was a sea of blue, maroon, yellow and green and it was fantastic to see both clubs creating such a positive atmosphere for our young athletes.”
She also thanked Tully Athletics for their support.
“A huge thank you to Tully for bringing your athletes and volunteering your time to help officiate. We truly appreciated the way you helped make the night run so smoothly,” Ms Zupp said
Tully Little Athletics praised the event, saying: “An extra special thanks to the barbecue legends for cooking up a delicious dinner and providing treats”.
Rach Holder added: “It was a great night. The sausage sizzle and drinks were a hit.”
The celebrations continued with news from Little Athletics Queensland, which announced that Cassowary Coast Athletics was one of 15 winter centres to reach or exceed 100% of last year’s registration numbers, a significant achievement for the growing club.
Most recently, the club hosted the Little Athletics Queensland Tropical North Regional Championships at Castor Park on 13 September, welcoming athletes from under-7 to under-17 from across the region for a full day of competition.
