School powers ahead
GOOD Counsel Primary School has launched into 2026 at full pace, with 351 students, bustling classrooms and a calendar packed with learning, sport, faith events and community activities.

The school welcomed 50 new preps across two classes, along with 10 new students from years 1-6 and three new staff members – year 5 teacher Courtney Spokes, year 2 teacher Kathryn Cann, past student Alexis Onaindia, who has returned as a prep school learning officer, with new year 5 teacher Caitlin Melloy joining the staff in term two.
GCPS continues to offer a strong academic program supported by 1:1 iPads and Chromebooks, with principal Liam Kenny, now in his 15th year leading the school, confirming mathematics and reading as the major academic focus for 2026.
Grounded in the Good Samaritan charism, the school community strives to welcome all, show compassion and serve others. This ethos is reflected in the wide range of programs available, including a before-school homework club, the Brain Boosters reading intervention program, specialist lessons in music, drama, dance, science and Mini Vinnies.
The tuckshop operates three days a week, while the Good Counsel Primary School Playgroup, run by Ashleigh Gordon-Cooke, brings families with children from birth to five years together every Friday morning during school terms.
The school’s P&F Association meets on the third Tuesday of each month and hosts a variety of fundraising events throughout the year, including themed discos, barbecues, trivia nights and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day activities.
Fr Kerry Crowley continues his role as parish priest, with students attending regular class liturgies at Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church, as well as special feast days and celebrations.
Term 1 has already delivered a long list of highlights: Lenten activities, cross country, Harmony Day, NAPLAN, Feast of the Senses, St Patrick’s Day Green Dress Day, a visit from International Legends of League players and the ‘Walk in Their Shoes’ charity event, where year 6 students walked or ran non-stop for two hours, while collecting second-hand joggers for those in need.
The students also enjoy a broad sporting program, taking part in gala days and competitions across rugby league, soccer, netball, cricket, athletics, basketball, softball, cross country, league tag and touch football, while supporting local sporting clubs.
