Shorebird counting begins
THE Cassowary Coast’s shorebird and sea turtle monitoring program has officially kicked off, with the first volunteer training session.
A regional council spokeswoman said it was great to see so many community members come together to learn about identifying and monitoring the local shorebirds.
“A huge thank you to Simon Kennedy from BirdLife Australia for delivering the training, Goondoi for hosting us and to everyone who gave up their Saturday to get involved,” she said.
Program volunteer Craig Gilbert said it was worthwhile.
“It was incredibly informative and I really enjoyed the discussions throughout the day,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone get involved in the project and to building a better understanding of our region’s shorebird populations through the data we collect.
“I think this project comes at a particularly important time, given the potential arrival of H5 bird flu and having strong baseline monitoring in place will be invaluable.”
“Thanks again for all the work you’ve (council) put into getting this project underway.”
