So much to celebrate at Silkwood
SILKWOOD State School has joined schools around the country in celebrating 80 years of Book Week, marking the occasion alongside a welcome influx of new students.

The school began the year with 40 primary-aged students, and the addition of 16 new enrolments has brought the total to 56. “Which is fantastic,” Principal Chris Cattarossi said. He added that it was “lovely to have the nearby Silkwood Catholic Community Kindy come along” to join the celebrations with activities inside the school library.
“For a small town, we are spoiled to have two very good schools,” Mr Cattarossi said. “Cheryl (Piotto) runs a terrific Kindy and some of those Kindy students may one day attend here (at the state school). We have, in addition, a vibrant playgroup that draws in families from around the Cassowary Coast.”
Mr Cattarossi also praised the commitment of the school’s Parents and Citizens Association, noting that 10 members now attend regular meetings and play an active role in supporting school events.
Support has also come from the wider community, with JD’s Rocket Fuel Café and Bishop’s Silkwood Butchers contributing food donations for raffles and events.
Mr Cattarossi said Silkwood State School had become “a real hub of community activity”.
