Soulful sounds for opening
MISSION Arts is set to deliver one of its most memorable exhibition openings yet, with renowned acoustic duo Out of Abingdon bringing their soulful, jazz infused sound to the gallery’s anniversary awards exhibition on 14 August.
The addition of live music promises a rich, multi-sensory arts experience as the community celebrates another year of showcasing exceptional local and regional talent.
Since opening in 2011, Mission Arts has championed creativity through its annual art awards and this year’s event will blend visual art with the atmospheric sounds of Out of Abingdon, a duo adored on the Australian festival circuit for their stripped back guitar, double bass and smooth, captivating vocals.
Featuring Warwick Hargreaves and Tina Fullerton, the pair have toured extensively across Australia, Europe and the UK, performing in jazz clubs from Edinburgh to Berlin.
Now living and travelling full-time in their converted house truck, they channel life on the road into their music, including their fifth independent album ‘Red Dirt Tracks’ (2024).
Their style defies easy categorisation, drawing influences from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Björk, jazz, blues and contemporary greats.
Their musicianship and on-stage chemistry have made them sought after collaborators, performing alongside artists such as Vince Jones, Dave Steel and Neil Murray. Critics have praised their unique sound.

Guests at the opening night will enjoy Out of Abingdon’s ‘sonic elixir’ while exploring a gallery brimming with original works from some of the region’s most talented artists.
This year’s exhibition will award $4650 in prizes across categories including 2D, 3D, ceramics, people’s choice, Cassowary Coast artist and judge’s choice.
Two new awards have been introduced: the FNQ tropical lifestyle award for artwork in any medium that best represents Far North Queensland’s tropical lifestyle and the emerging artist award, recognising artists with less than five years’ practice who have not held a solo exhibition or won a major art prize.
Opening night on 14 August from 6pm is a ticketed event featuring a complimentary welcome drink, catered canapés, art awards presentation, live music, raffle and lucky door prizes.
The exhibition will be open to the public daily from 15 August – 22 September, 10am – 2pm, and it will conclude with the announcement of the people’s choice award on 23 September.
