South Johnstone in eight-a-side finals
A NAIL-biting one shot victory has propelled South Johnstone into the Tropical Far North Queensland eight-a-side finals, after edging out Silkwood 55-54 in a thrilling section three match-up at Silkwood Bowls Club on 11 April.
The narrow win capped off a dramatic day on the greens and confirmed both clubs’ places in the upcoming semi-finals at Brothers Edmonton on 26 April.
The mixed South Johnstone team of Timothy Kerrigan, Cindy Hopkins, Ann Rowbotham, Shane Dunne, Vera Rowe, Louise Hoskins and Bobby Wright secured the crucial result.
Silkwood’s line up of Denise Charman, Anna Della Bella, Robert Nowell, Tony Cates, Joanne Townsend, John Purkiss, Daniel Gauci and Leeann Mayell pushed them all the way in a result that could have swung either direction.
Meanwhile, Marlin Coast stamped themselves as the team to beat in section one, powering through all three of their matches against Mossman, Stratford and Brothers Edmonton. Their two mixed pairs combinations of Terry McAlary with Shane Bettess, and Stephen Pitt with Andrea Lim, along with the fours team of Valerie Still, Rhys Gillman, Neil Robson, Chad Hughes, Leonie Sims and Esther Yong, delivered consistent, high margin wins to secure a semi final berth.
The semi-finals are played over 21 ends, or a time limit of 3hrs 30mins.
