Special day for holy man

MORE than 100 members and friends of the Far North Queensland Italian community have gathered for a special Italian Mass at Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church, honouring St Pius X, patron saint of Trevisani nel Mondo.

Association president Claudio De Faveri officially welcomed attendees before the Trevisani anthem and grace led by Fr Kerry Crowley.

Mr De Faveri reflected on the significance of the celebration.

“Today we pay our respects to Pope Pius X, who is not only the patron saint of Treviso immigrants, but whose patronage extends to catechumens, pilgrims and many dioceses and societies worldwide.”

Fr Crowley said Pope Pius, like Pope Leo, was a successor of St Peter.

“His motto ‘to restore all things in Christ’ guided his liturgical reforms, from the Gregorian chant to encouraging regular reception of holy communion.”

Born Guiseppe Melchiorre Sarto in Riese, Treviso, in 1835, St Pius X rose from humble beginnings as the second of 10 children to become Pope in 1903 at the age of 68. He is remembered for lowering the age for first communion to around seven and for his dedication to theological and pastoral service. He died on 20 August 1914 aged 79 was canonised in 1954 and his feast day is celebrated on 21 August.

Trevisani nel Mondo, founded by Don Canuto Toso, supports migrants from Treviso who have settled around the world. The North Queensland branch, established in 2015, brings together Trevisani descendants and friends from Cairns, the Tablelands, Innisfail, Tully, Ingham, Townsville, Ayr, Home Hill and beyond.
