Stabilising job delayed
WORK to re-stabilise the slope behind the South Mission Beach boat ramp and toilet block is still underway, more than two-and-a-half years after huge rains brought by Cyclone Jasper caused a landslip.

The southern end of Kennedy Esplanade will remain closed until at least early August this year, as will the boat ramp and the toilet block while the task is finished.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council has let the public know about the delays with the work via social media.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the landslip stabilisation works at the southern end of Kennedy Esplanade, South Mission Beach, will take longer than originally anticipated,” its post said.
Council said the closures would remain in place “to keep our community and contractors safe.”
The toilet block itself was not damaged during Cyclone Jasper, but further wet season rain since has delayed the work, originally scheduled to be finished earlier this year.
Works foreshadowed at the time included cleaning up debris and removing loose rock and installing rock bolts and slope-mesh to reduce the risks of any ongoing rockfall.
Since last year, the nearest similar amenity for boaties, visitors and walkers has been available 1.5km north, near the boat club at South Mission Beach.
“Soil nailing works are continuing to stabilise the landslip caused by Cyclone Jasper, with works now expected to be completed in early August 2026, weather permitting,” council said in its latest post on the work.
“We sincerely apologise for the delay and thank the community for your patience and cooperation while these important safety works are completed.”
There was some good news however, with council confirming the work on the slope is not affecting walkers using the popular Kennedy Trail, which starts at the toilet block.
Work to repair the track was completed recently, after heavy rains during the wet season this year caused similar slips and debris ending up along the boardwalk, as well as damage to the boardwalk railings.
After a question in the comments about access to the track, council responded: “The Kennedy Track is open and accessible.
“We kindly ask all visitors to follow the on-site signage, which provides important directions for pedestrian traffic.
“This may include the use of the beach as an access route if able. Enjoy your visit.”
