State-of-art trucker’s stop
A NEW truck-stop United service station and Pie Face food outlet have been given the go-ahead on the site of the existing United servo on the Bruce Highway at Cardwell, with the redevelopment expected to start this year.

The existing buildings will either be demolished or, in the case of the residential dwelling behind the fuel station, possibly relocated to make way for the larger project to be built on about 4000sqm at the corner of Victoria St (Bruce Highway) and Richard Street.
At its December meeting Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s planning services department said in a summary: “The facility will operate 24 hours, seven days a week, with one to three staff per shift. Fuel deliveries, stock movement and waste collection will be scheduled outside peak periods to minimise amenity impacts.”
There was a short debate on the project before councillors approved it with attached conditions. “I think this is a really good project, it’s a great redevelopment of the site and I see a future where some of these places will be putting charging stations in at the same time, because you still want to get people going through your drive-throughs and through your little cafes,” Cr Jeff Baine said, while moving that the development be approved.
There will be eight light vehicle refuelling points and six heavy vehicle refuelling points under a dedicated high-flow truck canopy to include two truck spaces.
The plan includes a convenience store and two drive-through holding bays, and eight on-site car parks, including one Disability Discrimination Act-compliant space.
“To help finding your way and visibility along this major transport corridor, the proposal includes internally illuminated advertising devices, a 10m pylon sign at the intersection of Victoria/Richard Street corner and an 8m-high Pie Face drive-through sign along Victoria Street,” the council summary says.
In Cardwell, the new station will become the town’s only proper heavy vehicle refuelling stop, with the next nearest on the highway at Tully.
