Step out in art deco style
INNISFAIL is preparing to step back in time with the Tropical Art Deco Festival, hosted by the Innisfail & District Historical Society from September 14 to 21.

The eight-day celebration will showcase the town’s rich Art Deco heritage through a variety of events, ranging from lively jazz performances and vintage markets to historical tours and a Great Gatsby themed picnic.
The festival opens on Sunday, September 14, with the popular Art Deco High Tea at the Shire Hall, featuring entertainment, raffles and prizes. New to the program this year is A Century of Art Deco Design, a multi-media presentation at the Innisfail Library, offering insight into the unique architecture that has earned Innisfail its reputation as the Art Deco capital of Australia.
Other highlights include the Historical Cemetery Walk, Murder Mystery Dinner and free guided tours of the Johnstone Shire Hall. The Historical Society Museum on Edith Street will also be open, with visitors encouraged to explore the town’s heritage via a free self-guided walking tour app.
Historical Society president Trish Ernst said the program offered “something for everyone”, and encouraged locals to take part. “We’ve got some great events planned for September, so we need the community to support our festival by getting involved and coming along,” she said. Vintage car owners are also being invited to display their vehicles at the Great Gatsby Picnic.
With eight days of fashion, history, music and entertainment on offer, organisers say the Tropical Art Deco Festival is set to be one of Innisfail’s highlights of the year.
The full program and booking details are available at www.innisfailhistory.com.au and on the festival’s social media pages.
