Good Counsel College year 12 student Tony Yang was one of 305 year 11 and 12 students from across Queensland and northern New South Wales hosted at the annual QUT Future You Summit.

It was a four-day event where high schoolers got to experience university life and receive insights from QUT staff, students and alumni through hands-on workshops and seminars in 10 career streams.

“QUT sponsors the transport and accommodation for the regional students to make the event accessible to everyone,” said a university spokeswoman.

“It’s a big achievement to be selected too, as the summit gets hundreds of applicants every year.”

Mr Yang covered the ‘health heroes’ stream.

“What I loved the most about the QUT Future You Summit is how it really showed what uni life would be like,” he said.

“I did not know anyone from the boarding house or from my stream.

“But getting put into a new environment without knowing anyone is as realistic as it would get for me, as I will be moving away from my rural area into the city for uni.

“Making friends was easier than expected as everyone was really nice and cooperative and the sessions helped show what lectures would be like and what to expect, alongside the guest speakers sharing advice and their story.”

Mr Yang hopes to return to Brisbane next year to study pharmacy.
